An ePortfolio and its Benefits

Updated: Jul 24, 2023

Getting Started with my ePortfolio
In Special Education “data” is the key word to help you emphasize what a student’s strengths are, what they have done in your classroom, the daily behaviors they show, and also the weakness they may have. Special education teachers are then able to bring this students’ data to their annual meetings, and helps give them an idea of the student’s plan for the next year.
An e-portfolio is an adult’s version of their data. It is the digitalized place for an individual to bring to an interview for a prospective employer. It will show the employer what they have done, what they have learned, how they learned, and what may be their plans for the future.

Why use an ePortfolio?
Overtime technology has changed significantly. It has allowed us to have choice, ownership, voice, and authenticity in what we innovate, do, or create (COVA). An ePortfolio is a technological creation that we can use to advocate, publish, and show what we have created, show how we have succeeded, and show what we plan on completing in our future. You can show the work you have created to employers, investors, and colleagues. You have worked too hard to accomplish your growth tasks in writings, projects, and professional developments to allow them to sit in a file folder on your desktop or in files and not let them be seen.
We can use our ePortfolio to invest in our self. You can take your own imagination and reflect on your new knowledges and experiences in blog posts that can then be posted in your ePortfolio to show who you are and how the new knowledge strengthens you. Your ePortfolio is a place that you can share these wonderful ideas, innovations, and knowledge with others to promote who you are and what is important to you in your growth.

Who Owns the ePortfolio?
Instead of using the words assignments, maybe use growth tasks. When introducing growth tasks, they are task they allow the student to grow in the skills they are learning. When students think of assignments they think of grades, and give teacher the minimum to get the grade they need to pass the class. If you allow them to use growth tasks, it allows students to take ownership of their work because it allows them to grow. When building a portfolio, they can have growth tasks that will allow them to take ownership in their full creation. This will allow them to have a deeper connection with the tasks and build among the task as they build their portfolio creation.
Let our students take ownership of their ePortfolio creation, and allow them to grow as they build their creation.

I like the concept of an e-Portfolio for both children and adults. It can help teachers know more about their student's needs before the school year begins. It can also help employers learn more about their candidates before entering the interview. This would allow for more tailored questions and learning. Thank you for the insight on this tool.
