Change!

Updated: Jul 23, 2023

Change is everywhere. We have change in the weather, change in ourselves, change in our daily schedules, change in your city’s architecture, and change in technology. In Special Education, every day is not going to be the same. Your plans will change due to student’s behaviors, unexpected medical concerns, and/or last-minute paperwork.
Have we had change in the educational system? Yes, as education has progressed through the years, there are examples of things that have changed. One thing that has changed according to the video “Progressive Education in the 1940s” is how the children were disciplined. In the 1940s, students stayed after school to be punished and spanked. Today, students are called to the office during the day and they sit down in the Assistant Principles office and are talked to. These students are usually assigned in school suspension (ISS), lunch detention, after school detention, and/or Saturday school. Another example of the change in education from the 1940s until now include the focus on learning. Schools in the 1940s, focused more on strengthen a child’s memory, while today they focus on hands on learning and relating objectives to real life scenarios.
Can we change how we use our words? Yes, in the video “The Power of Words,” the words on the man’s sign started with “I am blind.” These three words only have personal connections with few people. Most people walking by read and continued to walk on, which resulted in the man getting the minimum assistance. Once the girl who walked by changed his sign to “It’s a Beautiful Day” the man’s assistance increased tremendously, and more people stopped and read his sign. The way the women started the new sign was in a way that communicated the same message that the man wanted others to see, but it had a personal connection with other’s passing by. By changing the way we use our words, we can result a larger impact on what we are trying to succeed in.
We must keep up with all of the changes in our society and grow our educational system. As Abraham Lincoln said, “We must rise with the new.” We must consider our society and how it has changed to keep the attention of the learners in our classroom. Changes help us grow, it introduces us to the new while remembering the old, and it keeps us going in the society we are continuing to learn to live in.

I really appreciate you mentioning that change brings us new ideas but does not necessarily mean we forget our past. Remembering the old is equally as important so we can reflect and make connections to why we are making the changes we are.
