Growing a Growth Mindset in My Classroom

Updated: Jul 23, 2023

After watching two videos Developing a Growth Mindset with Carol Dweck and Mindset and Success, I was able to differentiate the two different mindset types. A fixed mindset is that a person is fixed on one thing and the outcome either makes them or breaks them. With a growth mindset a person who takes their challenges and success to the next level thinking about what they could have done to grow and be better. You can have a mindset in many areas including relationships, your education, your health, etc., But what mindset you choose could determine the ability that you bring out now and in the future. As I look at myself and determine what kind of mindset I have, I have a fixed mindset in my personal life, but a growth mindset in my professional life. If I work hard to transition the fixed mindset that I have in my personal life to go to a growth mindset, I can see myself working more on my financial needs and relationship needs. With a transition like this I could see my personal life increasing and being more successful just like I am in my professional life due to the growth mindset I have in the area.
Growing up I was faced with the challenge of having a disability that could affect my learning and future outcomes. I had to learn how to keep my self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-motivation higher than what peers made me feel. It was difficult at times, but with my growth mindset as a young child I was able to overcome all the challenges. Overcoming the challenges lead me to being a teacher of students facing similar challenges I had faced as a child in grade school. Knowing and seeing the similarities my students in my classroom face and I had faced at their age motivates me to teach them to have a growth mindset to improve their self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-motivation. We as educators need to strive to flip the fixed mindsets into growth mindset for the well-being and success of our students.

I agree that mindset is an important factor in success, both personally and professionally. Thank you for you candor in sharing your personal challenges. I'm inspired by your story of overcoming and channeling your experiences into becoming a teacher. As educators, we have a responsibility to help students develop growth mindsets, and I believe that it's essential for the well-being and success of our students.

Your students are blessed to have you!
